<br />
I wanted to spread the word about a great new tournament module for use with Dungeon World published by <a href="http://svdpress.com/index.php">SVD Press</a>.<br />
<br />
Written by Dungeon Oracle, the same guy that wrote such fourthcore classics as <a href="http://svdpress.com/products/murder-maelstrom-queen.php">Murder of the Maelstrom Queen</a>, <a href="http://svdpress.com/products/vault-wyrm-prince.php">Vault of the Wyrm Prince</a> and <a href="http://svdpress.com/products/tower-ascendants.php">Tower of the Ascendants</a>, this adventure features maps and art by your favourite Crypt Thing!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://svdpress.com/products/fortress-ur-mage.php"><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Fortress of the Ur-Mage</strong></span></a><br />
<br />
<em>It is said that the gods tasked Death with keeping the secrets of magic locked behind his Black Gates. And so the fallen races remained blind to the ways of magic, until one man challenged and defeated Death in a battle of wits.</em><br />
<em></em><br />
<em>In victory he claimed Death's wand and became the first mortal to perceive the mysteries of the black art, only to be driven mad by the revelations. These half-remembered legends tell too of his sundering of the world and his construction of a dread fortress.</em><br />
<em></em><br />
<em>The Ur-Mage opens the doors of his fortress once each decade, allowing the heroes and demigods of the realm to enter. Legend has it that a great prize waits within the fortress, the Wand of Death itself, and a crusader bearing the wand could command the dead, shatter the planes, and slay gods.</em><br />
<em>Today, the games begin. Today, the gates open.</em> <br />
<br />
Fortress of the Ur-Mage is the first SVD Press adventure to feature a competitive head-to-head mode, where multiple parties delve the dungeon at the same time. Competing bands of crusaders can hinder each other by stealing relics, laying traps, freeing monsters, and manipulating the dungeon environment itself.<br />

I've been spending a lot of time world-building of late. After quite the hiatus, I'm going to start Dungeon Mastering again, running a monthly D&D Next campaign set in my homebrew world of Serantum. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<em>It's been 20 years since the great wizard-kings of Glindor set their continent afloat and disappeared from the world below. In the wake of this great ascension the great Demon Rift was created, an enormous scar left upon the surface of the world and a gateway to the Underworld beneath. The demons of the Underworld have surged forth in unending numbers and savaged the surface world. The world of Serantum is now a grim and dangerous place, a ruined reflection of past glories.</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<em></em> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<em>To the west of the Rift Sea lies the kingdom of Auctoria, a lone bastion of civilization in an otherwise ruined world. This is where our story will begin.</em> </div>

I'm pretty pleased with how this map came out and look forward to mapping the rest of my world and getting back into the DM seat. I hope you enjoy!<br />

<br />
I recently submitted my work to a cartography contest over at <a href="http://www.koboldpress.com/">Kobold Press</a>. The challenge was to create a map of a flying tower; a difficult mapping challenge for sure!<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, the contest received few submissions, so instead of putting it to a vote, they went ahead and selected a winner. Sadly, it was not my day.<br />
<br />
Instead of letting my efforts go for naught, I present to you my submission for your viewing pleasure, The Tower of the Storm Lord!<br />

Greetings Cartophiles,<br />
<br />
I've recently had the pleasure of working on the mapping and illustration for an upcoming fourthcore dungeon, Pit of the Void Locust. Designed by Anthony Franchini <a href="https://twitter.com/DeuceDM">(@DeuceDM</a>), this tournament module promises to be over-the-top, evocative, and ludicrously difficult -- everything a good fourthcore dungeon should be!<br />
<br />
The first playtest will be held at <a href="http://albanygameday.blogspot.ca/">Albany Game Day</a> on June 8th; if you're in the area I strongly suggest you go check it out.<br />
<br />
When the Void Locust rises, all mortal life will be lost; look upon its majesty and despair!<br />
<br />
<br />
Cheers,<br />

<br />
Recently, <a href="http://legend4rydnd.blogspot.ca/"><i>Sorcerer_Blob</i></a> was waxing nostalgic on twitter about drawing comics growing up; it got me thinking about my own childhood as an aspiring comic book artist. Going through my portfolio of old work, I stumbled upon this absurd little gem:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6FYuwhzqfGPSkpSTFA1LUFYTVU"><span style="font-size: large;">The Three Little Pigs</span></a><br />
<br />
<i><a href="http://www.theworldisflattery.blogspot.ca/">Flatt_World</a></i> and I co-wrote this comic for a media class back in highschool. Although the art was crude and rushed (I was 15 at the time and we only had a week to turn it around), I'm still very proud of it.<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy!<br />

<br />
13 nights ago, when the winds fell silent and the moon turned blood red, a mysterious tower emerged amongst the sandy dunes of the Cindersand Desert. What mysteries lie in waiting behind the doors of this ominous structure?<br />
<br />
Who among you has the courage to brave the Tower of the Blood Mage?<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
It has pained me that I haven't had the time to tend to this blog. Working full time while pursuing a professional designation hasn't left me with much time for gaming <i>or</i> mapping.<br />
<br />
That said, I now have several sessions of D&DNext under my belt, and I have to say I still love it. I love the rules-light, fast-paced, "theatre-of-the-mind" (for lack of a better term), style of game we've been playing. I'm eager for more.<br />
<br />
I've begun to detail a new campaign world for when I run a full-blown D&DNext campaign in the future. So I'll have maps for that setting coming down the pipe when the setting starts to crystallize and take shape.<br />
<br />
Also, I've started to map out an adventure location, <i>The Tower of the Blood Mage</i>. I think my dungeon mapping is starting to greatly improve. I think I'm hitting a satisfying mix of old-school mapping elements and illustrative detail and style. I'd love to hear what you think.<br />
<br />

<br />
Run by the unrivalled dungeon master, C Steven Ross of <a href="http://dmg42.blogspot.ca/">DMG 42</a>, this game promises to be a grisly, deadly, deathtrap of the highest caliber. I couldn't be more thrilled to be participating.<br />
<br />
I am a huge fan of fourthcore, and this will be my first chance to run through one of the modules as a player. It was challenging not devouring the product on release like usual, but it was well worth it.<br />
<br />
You can follow the action thus far in the following threads:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://dmg42.blogspot.ca/2012/08/snd-02-ooc.html">OOC</a><br />

<br />
In our valiant attempt to take down the being known as the Heresiarch, I will be playing the shadar-kai ranger and cleric of the Storm Lord, Talon. Check out my character illustration and character sheet.<br />
<br />
And above all else, wish us luck...are we ever going to need it!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b>

<br />
<i>Talon grew to manhood in the slave pits of Talia.
Toiling day and night for his draconic masters, the young shadar-kai knew only
the back-breaking hardship of the mines and the savage cruelty of the whip.
Talon's prayers were finally answered the day the sky opend up and Talia was
obliterated by the great meteor. Spared the celestial energies that destroyed
the surface, the slaves of the residuum mines took the opportunity to make their
escape. In the battle that ensued between slaves and guards, Talon strangled the
guard watching him with his shackles. The newly freed slave made his way to
the surface and promptly fled the Fallen Lands.<br /><br />Travelling across unknown kingdoms, Talon has found the
same cruelty and savagery of his upbringing everywhere he has gone. Revering the
capricious and powerful Storm Lord, he has learned that the only thing one can
rely on is power; strike your enemies down before they have a chance to raise a
hand against you.<br /><br />Talon has now
risen to put a stop to the being known as the Heresiarch. Never again will Talon
bow down and live a life in chains. He would sooner die.</i><br />

My backlog of maps (ones that are composed entirely of my own work and that are of sufficient quality to share) has been exhausted, and all the work I've been doing recently has been for projects that I can't share (yet).<br />
<br />
So here is a sneak peak at one of the illustrations for a 4e dungeon I've been writing. I've altered and expanded upon the Saw-themed dungeon I talked about in an <a href="http://www.cryptthing.blogspot.ca/2012/04/getting-band-back-together.html">earlier post</a>. I plan on sharing the finalized adventure here on Crypt Thing. It's been a painstakingly slow process, but I wanted to share <i>something</i> with you. So here is my illustration of the Vrock Lich, Silenus.<br />

Even if you can't wait until I complete my adventure, I hope you can get some use out of this guy.<br />

Here is a sneak peek at my upcoming <a href="http://www.fourthcoreteamdeathmatch.com/">Fourthcore Team Deathmatch</a> map I've been working on recently.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I'm still tweaking the rule set, so there may be some changes coming to this map as I hammer everything out. Size may be an issue, but I'll leave it to playtesting to determine if this is a problem that needs addressing.<br />
<br />
So what do you think?<br />
<br />
And if you haven't checked out <a href="http://www.fourthcoreteamdeathmatch.com/">FTDM</a> before, what are you waiting for? It's a blast!<br />

think this is a strong map. While there was some confusion as to how the lava
terrain functioned and the magic item (Blackrazor) was never utilized, the map
made for a fast-paced play experience that emphasized tactical placement and
character design (I believe this is a map that would-be FTDM map designers should
look to as an example of solid streamlined design).<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">BFlat, one of my D&D players and long-time friends is launching a new RPG blog, <a href="http://theworldisflattery.blogspot.ca/">Flatt World</a>. With well over a decade of experience as a D&D player, BFlat will now be taking the arduous journey to DMhood. <a href="http://www.theworldisflattery.blogspot.ca/">Flatt World</a> will act as a stage for his ideas as he builds out his campaign world. Please take the time to go check it out and let him know what you think.</span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Coinciding with the inaugural launch of his own blog, BFlat has written a guest post here at Crypt Thing wherein he gives us his impressions of the D&D Next playtest from a player's perspective: </span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Ok, maybe love is a
strong word for a character I used for all of an hour (so far). Without any
customization options beyond spell memorization, it's difficult to see what the
class is really capable of. What magic schools (if any) are going to be available?
What will be the upward limit of a wizard's power? <b>When do I get my
fireball?</b><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">The point here is
that there is still way to much left for WoTC to figure out. And rightly so.
They've opened themselves up to a dearth of opinions from the entire
D&D-playing <s>universe</s> internet, a population that will not rest until
they've posted their points of view—however relevant or useful—anywhere they
can…<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<i><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">*cough…cough</span></i><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">That said, there are
some things that I think really work and hope will make it into the final edition.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Minor Spells</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Magic Missile became
my go-to spell again, functioning as I would expect it to and dealing enough
damage to fell a kobold. Enough said.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Other Spells</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">I appreciated the
simplified nature of spell descriptions. My biggest issue with 3rd edition was
the amount of time I spent looking up spells in the PHB or Compendium. Even
though we misused Comprehend Languages in an encounter with the kobold
chieftain, and assumed it granted the ability to speak the language as well as
understand it, the DM was so happy to try out the new skill challenge system
that he didn't care. We later figured out a way to make a charisma check
against an opposing intelligence save to see if the Kobolds could understand. A
simple spell description inspired us to roleplay through a situation that could
have easily seen our deaths.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Hit points</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">The first wizard I
ever played, in 2e, had all of 1 hit point. The DM gave us healing potions at
one point, and I gave mine to the fighter because if I ever needed the potion,
I'd be dead. 16 was enough to survive a few sling bullets, but still feel a
sense of urgency. We haven't yet used the healing or rest mechanics, but I
think the lack of easy healing will bring a sense of urgency back to the game.
It was assumed that a cleric could keep a party alive no matter what in 4e.
Now, in the playtest at least, it's not nearly as certain.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">High Elf</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Personally, I'm very
happy to get rid of the Eladrin and go back to the older classifications. The
name High Elf evokes Tolkien, a sense of history and eternity, whereas Eladrin
meant very little to me. Free Spirit, Keen Senses, and Low-Light Vision all
felt exactly like the elf of yore, without being a dominating factor in the
character build.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Background and
Themes</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Similarly, these
inform the build without being a dominating factor. I flubbed my two lore
checks—showing that they aren't ways of getting around role-playing as 3e
Bardic Knowledge tended to be—but they are handy tools to move things along
when the players are stumped. So long as there are numerous options to inform
builds, and not become over-powered, they will only add richness to the game.<b>
</b><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">I have very few
concerns right now, beyond fears over the level of variety in character design
(which will likely be unfounded), and spell descriptions either being too
ambiguous or too complex. 4e brought a level of clarity to combat situations
that I hope they keep, while still encouraging creative applications of a basic
set of rules. My own wishes are dangerous, as they assume a sense balance and
elegance that won't end up bloated and unwieldy after four years of
development, or broken in the hands of power gamers. I tend to belong in the
power gamers camp most of the time, though I think in 4e that was easy if not
necessary. I'm looking forward to revisiting my roots as an explorer and
role-player in Next.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">In fact, I'm torn by
the fact that I have very little to argue with right now. The
advantage/disadvantage system doesn't allow for scaling, and Bounded Accuracy
will be hard to judge fully until we can see how it impacts the game at higher
levels. I want to provide constructive feedback, but I'm pleased with what I
see and I'll stay cautiously optimistic about what WoTC will release. I'll
leave the vehement arguing to the rest of the denizens of Twitter and the
forums.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

approached the cave and noticed some movement in the copse of trees above the
entrance. The fighter yelled out threateningly to them and he was greeted with
a chorus of barks and a hail of sling stones.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

damage from the stones, but the party handled the combat without too much
trouble.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">After looting
the bodies for ammunition, the party continued into the cave. The fighter
blundered into a pit trap but was able to avoid tumbling in. This alerted a
nearby group of kobolds that were playing cards. Both sides were fairly flatfooted,
so we rolled initiative with neither side being surprised. The Halfling rogue
got the drop on the kobolds and decided he’d try and take one hostage and
intimidate the rest. I had him roll a dexterity contest with the kobold to see
if he could grab him and followed this up by a charisma check against a DC of
10+ the charisma mod of the kobolds. The rogue rolled well; he grabbed the
first kobold and put a dagger to his neck. The kobolds dropped their weapons
and happily fled the cave.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

the inhabitants of the caves of chaos used to pay respect to the Medusa, but
recently a group of humans wearing dark robes had taken her prisoner. The
mysterious humans demanded fealty from all the tribes of the ravine and gave
them a mandate to attack other humans along the southern road. The various

This was the capstone encounter of the first adventure in my old Shadows of Asteron campaign.<br />

<a name='more'></a><br />
After defeating a mad goblin shaman, the players found this adjacent cave housing the corrupting influence that was twisting the local goblin population. Attracted by the fallen shard of a powerful primordial being, foul creatures had emerged from the far realm and invaded the minds of the weak-willed goblins.<br />
<br />
After defeating the fell taints lairing here, the players were left with the primordial shard. Not trusting the authorities of Drysdale Keep, the party debated their next course of action. Should they take it to the dwarven artisans of Dunderhelm to get it fashioned into a weapon or take it the sages of White Lotus Academy in Basillon in hope of some clarity? They ultimately brought it to Basillon but found the mages there to be less than trustworthy.<br />

His twisted
and paranoid thoughts were dominated by the fear of losing his throne. Obsessed
with death, the heirless ruler tirelessly sought ways of extending his natural
life. He sent champion after champion out into the world, searching for means
to his immortality. His search finally led him into the dark halls of a dwarven
necropolis. After slaying the monks sworn to its protection, Ossen plundered
the hallowed halls of the ancestral crypt. Among the vast treasures he found
were a pair of magical war axes and a scroll containing a dark ritual. The
unholy ritual promised what Ossen had long sought: an eternal and undying

<br />
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This past Saturday, after a long hiatus, I finally got a
game of D&D in with my buddies. An old friend, (whom I hadn’t played with
in close to a decade), and a new guy (who was new to 4e) joined the group for a
session. I’ve historically struggled to get enough players together, so this was
great!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Although the dungeon was rather hastily thrown together,
overall I think it was a success.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><a name='more'></a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">When I let the old Shadows of Asteron campaign die, the overly
ambitious game had an absolute glut of dangling plot ideas that I had no idea
how to satisfactorily reconcile. It would have been a bloated mess, even if we
got together regularly. Given that I (as the DM) was having difficulty keeping
track of the plot, I could not rightly expect my players to do so.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">So I culled the campaign and took what was most memorable
and cool: the Twin City of Basillon and the leader of the cult of Vecna: the
Faceless One.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">When the PCs faced off against the Vecna Cult in the sewers
of Basillon, they confronted the Faceless One, and as they struck the final
blow against the demagogue, he melted away into a pool of icy water. The bastard was a simulacrum!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The PCs now hated and feared him (for he was clearly a
powerful spell caster). He was too perfect not to come back to. Enter the new
session:</span></div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond; font-size: x-small;">I want to play a game with you…</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This dungeon was largely inspired by the movie, Saw.
The PCs awoke in a dungeon chamber with no memory of how they got there. From
the coalescing vapours of a bubbling well an apparition of a masked figure (i.e.
the Faceless One) appeared and spoke to them:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; line-height: 115%;"><em>“<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Hello, Dungeoneers; I
want to play a game with you.”<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><em>"You are likely
wondering how you got here. Bemused and disoriented, your fleeting memories
betray you. What is this place? How did you get here? The unfortunate reality
is that you have no time for such deliberation. You have all been infected with
an insidious disease. As it pumps its way through your veins, this magical
affliction is slowly transmuting your living tissue into that of the undead.
Within days you will become my mindless slaves.”<o:p></o:p></em></span></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><em>“But do not despair,
dungeoneers; the means to reclaiming the lives you once knew is within you. In
the chamber beyond is an adamantine vault; the cure to your condition rests
within it.”<o:p></o:p></em></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; line-height: 115%;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; line-height: 115%;"></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The group was at the initial stage of the following
disease:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw3c4ykLuM9_w2tCObWB1BABUY-EHO0X-HDDcVRtLl3Qc2PX7IEw_Dn8J7l_bIDgjdSASAp-YT1KPc2hbQ2HXygYMe9O73tJ54Bv6ciOdP7UOHWwDrS9f5Qj0kI_2aA46-VrPvT-el1Ok/s1600/Zomb+dis.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="73" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw3c4ykLuM9_w2tCObWB1BABUY-EHO0X-HDDcVRtLl3Qc2PX7IEw_Dn8J7l_bIDgjdSASAp-YT1KPc2hbQ2HXygYMe9O73tJ54Bv6ciOdP7UOHWwDrS9f5Qj0kI_2aA46-VrPvT-el1Ok/s400/Zomb+dis.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The look of horror
on the new guy’s face when he read the final state of the disease was priceless.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">A similarly imprisoned orc NPC then decided that he had had
enough of the bullshit. He boldly strode forward and was promptly electrocuted
by the trapped door, his smoldering remains acting as a warning to the rest of
the group.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVDN3kcO22PexDVcwqlBPEaE8xqhb8Kd2S6eNY2xNmghgM65a7zNcpxCenIrm7qIy-wZ0L1N-MhyphenhyphenLmJY64yHkkUflpga3Ti81PSII1AeZ51E_pV-Vv75nw97_O0wAHYN8CFjm12OAFuOM/s1600/Entry+Chamber.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVDN3kcO22PexDVcwqlBPEaE8xqhb8Kd2S6eNY2xNmghgM65a7zNcpxCenIrm7qIy-wZ0L1N-MhyphenhyphenLmJY64yHkkUflpga3Ti81PSII1AeZ51E_pV-Vv75nw97_O0wAHYN8CFjm12OAFuOM/s400/Entry+Chamber.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">With the mage and thief working in concert, the door was
then safely bypassed.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The dungeoneers emerged in a large chamber containing an
adamantine cube (the vault). Four stone archways lined the eastern wall, and a skeleton
dangled from a wood crucifix on the western wall.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-XX1ILNdQDZdSdJffzZ7dshMI1rOsR35UH-qx1JFd7ZTgbkEv8Joz_hf6bM8p5Orto4SaL0ViXiJEHbCMw7gl3x01nIJWRWFyJPjP2ZX2KxtUD8LlLEs7R_slS0B5yp1DPtc57gi6n4s/s1600/Vault+Room.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-XX1ILNdQDZdSdJffzZ7dshMI1rOsR35UH-qx1JFd7ZTgbkEv8Joz_hf6bM8p5Orto4SaL0ViXiJEHbCMw7gl3x01nIJWRWFyJPjP2ZX2KxtUD8LlLEs7R_slS0B5yp1DPtc57gi6n4s/s400/Vault+Room.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">It was at this point that the thief noticed a gnarly scar
on his arm that hadn’t been there before. The rest of the dungeoneers soon
realized that they had similar scars. The paladin braced himself, opened the
wound, dug around, and found a hexagonal stone surgically implanted in his arm.
It bore a symbol of a crescent moon. The other PCs opened their stitching and
found similar stones engraved with various symbols. Then the party turned to
look at the two remaining NPCs. The <a href="http://dmg42.blogspot.ca/2012/04/halt-human-female.html"><em>human female</em></a> frowned, accepting what had to be done. The elf on the other hand…
the blood drained from his face and he began to back away, horrified at what
was being implied. The bard was able to calm him down with some gentle
encouragement (and a kick-ass diplomacy roll), and soon the field surgery
commenced.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The dungeoneers collected their eight surgically implanted
hexagonal stones. There were four matching pairs. One successful perception
check and one successful arcana check later, they realized that the symbols
corresponded to the keystones of the four stone archways, and that they were
keys to activating the portals.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">As they were deliberating which portal to activate, the
bard decided to approach the skeleton hanging from the crucifix. As he
approached it, the thing came to life, points of red light burning within its
ocular cavities. After attempting to parley with the thing and only receiving
hisses in response, he promptly retreated.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The paladin then decided that the undead creature was a slight
to his patron, the Raven Queen. He attempted to remove its head, and as soon as
he touched it the paladin disappeared.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The mage correctly identified this as a teleportation
effect. The dungeoneers decided that they would all touch the thing in turn.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">They found themselves materialized in a small crypt filled
with acid-logged zombies and a large vat of acid. </span><span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The dungeoneers quickly dispatched the zombies and the mage
valiantly retrieved the NPCs from the vat of acid. When they emerged from the
crypt, the dungeoneers found themselves in the same chamber as before; they
had come through a secret entrance behind the vault. They had wasted both time
and precious resources.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The thief inspected the door to the vault and found it
magically sealed. It also had four keyholes. Eureka.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The party decided to gather the hexes engraved with a
mountain and activate the corresponding portal.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The dungeoneers materialized in a room with 2 doors; they
disabled the traps and headed east into a flooded hallway with a wooden bridge
extending to a stone platform. Four statues animated and attacked when the
party reached the platform. The gargoyles hit the paladin pretty hard with some
thrown stones, but some well-placed teleportation effects on the mage’s part
allowed the party to lock them down and dispatch them without too much
difficulty (despite the bard falling through the bridge and into the icy drink
below).<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">After finding an arcane rune that restored one of their
healing surges, the dungeoneers headed north. There they found a room
containing a giant-sized throne. The floor was engraved with strange runes. The
mage cast a tongues ritual and was able to decipher the Giant language.
However, they still appeared to be randomly placed letters. The party was able
to decipher several possible words among the letters. After much deliberation,
they decided to try walking along the path spelt POWER. It was a wise choice,
and they traversed the room unharmed and retrieved a magical battleaxe. They
then walked along a path spelt TOR to the door on the western wall. From here they
entered the lair of Kryton, the Mountain King.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This area was really a half-baked idea that I never had the
time to fully realize before the game. As such, it came off pretty weak
tactically. I had originally intended the labyrinth area to be covered in vines
that would snake out and attempt to restrain the dungeoneers, while Kryton
hurled fireballs at them from afar. I never actually did this in the game, and
the labyrinth didn’t accomplish anything other than eating up time while I drew
it out. However, Kryton was a beast, so that kept the players on their toes.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">After easily mowing through orc minions in the labyrinth,
they quickly locked down the manticores. They then absolutely hammered Kryton
with daze and immobilize effects. He was still dangerous, but they were
eventually able to put the flaming chain-wielding Cyclops down. From his corpse
they retrieved a key.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">We ended the session there, with the party in possession of
one of the four vault keys and debating whether to risk a full-rest.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Despite the haste in which I threw the dungeon togehter, it was a pretty fun session.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Here is an old map I never put into use. It was originally intended as the castle my players were awarded stewardship of for my <a href="http://www.cryptthing.blogspot.ca/2012/02/keep-on-nine-hells-part-i-castle.html">Keep on the Nine Hells</a> adventure. I decided it was a bit too isolated and small (the adventure required a thriving community).<br />

The infamous Fortress of Despair was constructed by the mad lich, Xygarien. In order to protect the only means of his true destruction, the paranoid wizard designed this forlorn dungeon to confuse, confound and horribly maim any would-be heroes.<br />

This was my submission for Chris Perkins' dungeon map contest. I can't believe I won! Congratulations to <a href="http://slamdancr.com/wp/">Sersa Victory</a> for making the cut as well (epic work as always).<br />
<br />
I would have liked more time to tinker with the fine details, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It was really fun drawing an old school Gygaxian sprawl like this. It makes me want to go dust off the old 2e books (although maybe that's just all the D&DNext talk lately).<br />
<br />
Go vote for it now!<br />

<br />
Here is a battlemap from the first adventure of my old Shadows of Asteron campaign. The dungeon was home to a tribe of goblins twisted by abberent energies into savage foulspawn.<br />
<br />
I was dissappointed that none of the players decided to taste the sludge...<br />
<br />
Game on, friends.<br />Rwaluchowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01681979083809748832noreply@blogger.com2
